    • Jacobs

      Oct 2008 - Sept 2012
      Lighting and Electrical Technician

Whilst working at Jacobs as a Lighting and Electrical Technician, I was responsible for design of road, area, sports and architectural lighting and electrical design for multiple clients including Transport for London, Transport for Buckinghamshire, the Dover Harbour Board, London Boroughs and the Olympic Delivery Authority. I am a fast learner and was swiftly provided more and more complex and prestigious schemes including Cycle Superhighways in London and a MUGA and Activity Park in Kent which involved multiple aspects of sports, road and area design. My reputation made for multiple requests for secondment into client teams, ultimately resulting in lengthy secondments into both the Transport for London and Transport for Buckinghamshire contracts. My organisational skills were rewarded with the task of project management of schemes on the in-house COMPASS software, maintaining milestones and cascading information regarding schemes to the relevant designer as schemes progressed. At the end of my time with Jacobs, I was on secondment with Transport for Buckinghamshire as an Assistant Engineer and Project Manager, a grade above my listed role within Jacobs. Initially I designed and managed a third of the capital schemes portfolio, focussing on the structural replacement of age expired and structurally unsound columns across the county alongside design of schemes for the county, Parish and Town Councils, Developers and the Olympic Delivery Authority. I managed a section of the inventory in line with my schemes, updating our database as schemes reached completion and amending anomalies and incorrect entries as they appeared, increasing the reliability of our inventory significantly. Notable Projects:• Festive Lighting – LB of Newham• A2 Activity Park • Goswell Triangle Environmental Improvements • Dover Esplanade “Lighting Wave” (electrical design)• Elephant & Castle Roundabout Improvements• Countywide structural replacement programmes in Bucks Show less

    • Ringway Jacobs

      Sept 2012 - Jan 2015

In Oct 2013, I was promoted to Interim Team Leader for Capital Works. My work ethic and logical approach to the contract resulted in being offered the post on a permanent basis in Jan 2014. As Capital Lead, I was responsible for project management of all Capital funded schemes described in the Cabinet Members report for each financial year, ensuring that every scheme was completed on or ahead of time and on or under budget. I was budget holder for a portfolio of £5 million for schemes throughout Buckinghamshire and responsible for locating and realising 3% year on year savings. In the time that I was responsible for the budgets, a minimum of 7% savings were located and realised per year without affecting safety or performance on the network. As Capital Lead, I was responsible for preparation of bids for the next years’ work and setting up Medium Term Bids and Business Plans/Cases to support funding requests. I was also responsible for reporting to the senior management team, stakeholders and Councillors on a monthly basis. Every three months I was drafted to speak at a roadshow in different areas of the county to promote Lighting and to field questions from the public, Councillors, local government officials and the press. Owing to continued staff shortages, I maintained my role for the revenue team, actioning inventory updates, managing inventory tools and fielding queries from members of the public through the contact centre CRN systems. My work involved constant management and liaison with our in-house works team, supply chain partners and the three DNO providers for our area. All of my responsibilities ran alongside designing road and amenity lighting for the county and external clients such as Parish and Town Councils, the local theatre and the Olympic Delivery Authority. Notable Projects:• Variable Lighting Scheme Year 3 – Buckinghamshire Countywide • The Chesham Wellbeing Project – Chesham, Bucks Show less Following my secondment I moved to Ringway Jacobs permanently as part of the Transport for Buckinghamshire contract. Whilst working for RJ I continued my role, managing now two thirds of the capital scheme portfolio as well as designing for in house schemes, external clients, developers and the revenue team. Throughout my time in Buckinghamshire my role became more diverse, resulting in a step change to undertake full project management of the entire capital portfolio and to have budget visibility to maintain my projects within budget. Taking ownership of my projects I became the first port of call for the client and colleagues for technical advice and assistance and successfully turned around the overall perception of the team from colleagues and clients alike to a competent and helpful team who get the job done on or ahead of time and within budget. I had a great rapport with our clients and operated on a level of transparency previously unknown to the contract, resulting in a greater level of trust from our clients. Owing to staff shortages, I was also placed in a pivotal role for the revenue team, actioning inventory updates, managing inventory tools and fielding queries from members of the public through the contact centre CRN systems. My work involved constant management and liaison with our in-house works team, supply chain partners and the three DNO service providers for our area. Notable Projects:• Countywide structural replacement programmes• Street Lighting Energy Saving Trial (Switch Off)• Variable Lighting Scheme Year 2 (LED luminaire replacements) Show less

      • Capital Lead (Street Lighting Capital Works Team Leader)

        Dec 2013 - Jan 2015
      • Assistant Engineer - Lighting & Electrical

        Sept 2012 - Dec 2013
    • WSP in the UK

      Jan 2015 - Jun 2022

I am currently team leader for the South Lighting Team, covering staff based in Hertford, Cambridge and Birmingham. At present, most of my work is Section 38, Section 278, Section 106 schemes, environmental impact and sensitive receptor assessments for a variety of developers, architects and local authorities as well as Highways England, Homes England, SWTRA, TfL and various Housing associations. Schemes include road, amenity, sports and architectural lighting design to BS, EN, CIE, ILP, CIBSE and Sport England guidance and regulations. Projects range from reserved matters and planning application design all the way through to detailed design and construction technical queries. As part of the development of these projects I work closely with the term contractor and DNO to ensure their buildability and operation in line with the CDM Regulations 2015. Through innovation and effective management, I have improved productivity and profit for the business substantially and provided the staff in my care and beyond with greater autonomy and the ability to propose themselves for upcoming schemes that will improve their experience and development. This in turn has improved morale and retentions in the team with zero leavers and three hires in the South team since taking over leadership. I am the main point of call for both colleagues and clients for design queries and teach new techniques both internally and externally, partially through my management of the Lighting & Energy Solutions Learning and development sessions and partially through focused training, shadowing and mentorship. This mentorship has resulted in increasing the number of active Engineering Council applications in the WSP lighting team. Work on the learning and development elements of the team have resulted in 100% audit success for ILP and IET CPD records since the 2019 cycle and reduced Engineering Council registration lapse to zero. Show less My work consists of management, lighting and electrical design of road, amenity and architectural schemes for the existing client base and providing technical assistance and advice. I manage teams of designers and administrators from the resource pool and work closely with the stakeholders and contractors ensuring buildability and operation in line with the CDM Regulations 2015. I have full budgetary responsibility for schemes to deliver to programme and funding profiles. Currently the majority of my work is Section 38, Section 278 and Section 106 schemes for developers, architects, local authorities and Highways England including reserved matters and planning applications through to detailed design and technical queries. I also undertake sensitive receptor and environmental impact assessments for proposed MetroWest stations. In late 2015 I became Innovations and Technology Specialist providing research and advice services for new technologies within the lighting and electrical field. I am the main point of call for both colleagues and clients for design queries and teach new techniques to other members of the team running lunchtime CPD sessions and training on new systems and technology and am a mentor and point of contact for colleagues and clients for Engineering Council professional registration and membership within the ILP and IET. Throughout this position I have been creating the foundations for a diversity and inclusion strategy at the ILP, partnering with VIBE and InterEngineering to encourage women and LGBT people in engineering as well as acting as a STEM ambassador; inspiring the next generation of engineers. I have spoken at engineering, education, diversity and inclusion events for WSP and the ILP. Notable Projects:• Westminster and Brighton & Hove LED Strategy • Barking Riverside Professional Achievements:• Profiled by InterEngineering in their "What's it Like?" campaign • STEM Ambassador • Ready Steady Light Technical Award 2017 Show less
