My doctoral work is to understand and decipher the hitherto unknown mechanism of action of sodium chlorate (NaClO₃)-induced multiple tissue toxicity. NaClO3 is an environmental contaminant and it is commercially used as an oxidizing agent and bleach for paper pulp, printing and dying of fabrics, in leather finishing and tanning, in toothpaste and mouth wash, to make chlorine dioxide in water disinfection, and as a non-selective herbicide, defoliant and harvest aid. It is also found as a stable byproduct in drinking water that has been disinfected with chlorine dioxide. The major goal of this work was to evaluate the oxidative damage induced by NaClO3 in rat intestine and kidney since toxicity mechanism of NaClO3 remain scarce, and there is a lack of information about its mode of action.
