  While working with HEAD Nepal, an NGO working for people with disabilities and climate change in rural Himalayan villages in Nepal, I encountered a problem that shocked me to the core. The MRP of sanitary pads was 3x-4x in the market. I started working independently to solve the problem and later collaborated with HEAD Nepal to run it as their project called Rayna.Rayna is a sanitary pad bank built in Simikot to tackle the problem of exorbitant prices of such essential products. It has been facilitated by the CSR of Yeti Airlines and Padelux. We have made the pads available in the local stores at MRP and organize several awareness campaigns on menstrual health and hygiene.Worked with them Full-time for a year and switched to part-time while pursuing my post-graduate program at TISS Mumbai.   As a part of my postgraduate course curriculum at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, we were asked to choose a problem we would like to work on and I chose the livelihood opportunities for underprivileged women in the villages of Nepal. I started working with the Mithila Artists in Janakpur, Nepal. There were several problems that marred the growth of these artists like poor market linkage of their art and crafts, lack of solidarity amongst the artists themselves, lack of knowledge of business and sales, poor infrastructure in the country, etc. Danphey started working with 9 artists and created in-demand products like tote bags, bookmarks, pen stands, and other stationery and home decor products. There are still several problems that we are not even close to solving but starting to generate income for artists from B2C sales is a win in the right direction.This experience has helped me gain multiple skills in the business domains from Procurement, product development, handling finances, inventory, and negotiation. On the social front, I learned skills like stakeholder engagement and management, Problem-Solving, behavioral change, and also the complexities of livelihood-focused enterprises. Working with scarce resources and poor infrastructural development in Nepal, the challenges were many. Still, the efforts our artists were putting into making this work, gave us the needed push to breakthrough. Show less
