Having taught fully online units for four years, and undergone a few courses online, I find fascinating how different the approach is compared to traditional face-to-face education, and how few students know how to study online. Helping online students is becoming my professional pathway. Show less

    • University of Sydney

      Feb 2009 - Dec 2019
      Lecturer in Physiology

My most proud achievement at Sydney Uni was the major rewriting and coordination of the unit "Physiology and Pharmacology for Surgeons", within the Masters of Surgery at the Sydney Medical School. It was designed to help wannabe surgeons pass their physiology exam of the College of Surgeons. I introduced the use of Peerwise as an assessment and revision tool for both exams.I also coordinated the unit "Basic Sciences in Clinical Neurophysiology", helping with the redesign and introducing video assessments thinking of students in remote locations. Before that I taught physiology and neuroscience, and was the coordinator of two Neuroscience units of study. I also did some research in obesity and in developmental neuroscience.I continued my involvement on a casual basis, tutoring in the Neuroscience courses. I love making students use the brain to think about the brain. Show less

I teach physiology, anatomy and pathophysiology to students of nursing and paramedic practice. I have developed and delivered teaching material, assessment items, workshops and practical sessions.I teach both face-to-face, blended and online units, and I'm increasingly interested in online education [the way to the future? The future is already here!]. I have expanded my responsibilities in 2015 by taking on the co-coordination of two units, with 400+ students enrolled. The first change I did to the unit was introducing tools to teach students how to study online. I already have a few very grateful students, and we have not even done the exams yet. Show less

Most importantly, the students responded by increasing the approval rate of the unit from 62.3% to a staggering 89.1%. Clearly they liked it!In their description of this award, UTAS states "Teaching Merit Certificates (TMC) are aimed at a range of levels, from new and sessional staff (making valuable contributions to student learning), to more experienced staff (who are going above and beyond what is expected of them in their role).
