Drummer/percussionist Ian LeVine of Williamston has amassed over 40 years of musical learning, teaching and performing experience. While largely self-taught, Ian credits his father (also a drummer), Livonia middle and high school band director Richard Neal, and legendary Detroit area teacher/performer Gene Stewart among his early influences. A Livonia native who has been active in the mid-Michigan arts community since 1979, Ian initially attended Wayne State University by day while playing club dates and one-nighters in the metro Detroit area. After transferring to Michigan State he remained a member of the award winning MSU Jazz Band I under the direction of Ron Newman for nearly 5 years where his formative jazz performance experiences occurred in concert big band and more intimate small group jazz contexts. Known as a versatile and supportive player, Ian has performed throughout the midwest in a diverse set of musical circumstances ranging from festivals and discos, to The Firefly jazz club, The Grand Hotel to local halls, professional and community theaters and churches, to Spartan Stadium and the Breslin Center with many enjoyable stops in between. Ian’s already numerous musical credits continue to expand and speak to his instrumental skills on drums and auxilliary percussion, as as well as his ability to interact sensitively in live group performance. Current projects include the newly expanded Arlene McDaniel quintet; drummer with Lansing area classic/contemporary rock band "Updraft," show work with the Lansing Community College theater department, and facilitating monthly drum circles for both Marshall Music and the Mid-Michigan Autism Association. While remaining active as the primary percussion player with the MSU Spartan Brass and Strolling Spartan alumni bands, Ian can also be heard on jazz CD recordings by The Arlene McDaniel Trio – “Timeless” (2009) and vocalist Danielle Blanchard - “Jazz Portrait” (2001).
