      IGEN was a diagnostics device company for pharmaceutical companies (e.g., drug discovery) that was purchased by Roche in 2004.Worked on many areas of the M-series products (commercial launch 1999, 2003) including fluid mechanics, liquid heating (heat transfer and controls), diffusion of ions and gasses, forces on magnetic particles, low-noise amplifiers, 10’s of Watts power circuits, electrostatic shielding, and data analysis. Project lead for M1R. Specified performance and did the high-level design for a flow cell and cartridge based spectrophotometer. Supervised as many as 13 engineers & technicians. Show less

Drafted 8 non-provisional patent applications. Edited responses to office actions. Provided patent marking instructions for products. Reviewed documents to be made public for IP issues. Presented arguments at an oral hearing and at an appeal board in the European Patent Office. Attended examiner interviews and an appeal hearing at the US Patent and Trademark Office.Mechanical lead for M1M instrument (commercial launch Sep 04). Designed an internal mechanical shaker. Ensured product could withstand 75 g shocks and other MIL-STD specifications. Specified electrical, software, and regulatory requirements for M1M. Chairman of the change board committee.       Increased LKC's total revenue by 706% over 12 years. Led a 3-person team in the development of a new hand-held ERG device that can detect vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy. Starting with the recruitment of exceptional software and mechanical engineers, we designed and built the handheld RETeval device, and obtained regulatory clearance from the FDA, Japan, Europe, Brazil, Canada, Australia, etc. Personally designed the electronics and the signal processing algorithms used by the device. Led the development of the manufacturing line and custom manufacturing software that reduced the build time 40x compared to our legacy products. Helped run multiple clinical trials. Published 5 peer reviewed articles with national and international collaborators. Reviewer for IEEE, TVST, and Documenta Ophthalmologica journals. Gave 30+ research presentations at the ISCEV and ARVO conferences as well as being an invited speaker in Australia, Korea, India, and Mexico. Won the 2019 ISCEV international innovation award (the Marmor award) for work on detecting vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy. Most downloaded publication in 2017 from Documenta Ophthalmologica. In charge of world-wide intellectual property for LKC. Wrote four patent applications covering the inventions made, which have issued in the US, EU, Japan, and China. Edited the quality management system and have been audited for compliance to quality standards such as ISO 13485, 21 CFR 820, Ordinance 169, MDSAP, and MDR. Led risk analysis for all products. Wrote annual management review report encompassing product quality, purchasing, manufacturing, training, engineering, and regulatory requirements. Supported LKC's legacy products with electrical, mechanical, software, and manufacturing improvements.
