  I had a week work placement with Walter Lilly on a new build on the Wentworth estate. This was unpaid work experience. My responsibilities included looking at the buildings drawings and calculating placements of walls onsite that were to be erected, I then had to liaise with the foreman onsite to tell him where the walls were to be placed. I was also involved in organising deliveries onsite, and collecting the relevant paperwork to ensure it was all in order so that it could be filed and money could be claimed. Show less

  Industrial Placement Engineer

  Completed my year in industry with VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd in portsmouth on a new road construction project. The project involved construction of a link road to service a future development park from J3 of the A3(M) to an existing roundabout at Woolston road in Havant. This involved construction of a new roundabout and lay-by area for HGV's as part of S278 works. We also installed all new storm and foul water drainage systems, constructed a new bridge over the Hermitage stream and a local stream diversion, removing the existing reinforced concrete wall. I had varied involvement in this project, from working alongside the earthworks contractor completing daily cut/fill volume calculations to assist with commercial claims each month, to being the engineer solely involved with installing the drainage up to completion. I was also in charge of the tarmac operations, setting out block-ups checking works and completing dip sheets on each layer surface. Other involvement I have had has been with kerbing and construction of the road box for the carriageway and the footpaths. Setting out for position and levels of kerbs footpaths and the road box; also checking these works. I have also had involvement in reinforced concrete works, constructing a reinforced concrete protection slab over a High pressure gas main that rain through the site, and the construction of a flood defence wall at the stream and construction of the stream walls. As the project drew to a close I was the sole engineer on-site looking after all engineering operations that were still happening on-site, also I had a lot of correspondence with the client and the adopting authority completing snag walks regularly getting works signed off. I had a large liaison role with the designer; when issues arise on-site which mean that the design has to be changed I liaise with them to come up with a solution that is acceptable. Show less
