      May 2022 - Aug 2022
      Equine Management Summer Intern

At Miner Institute, under the direction of Karen Lassell, I learned how to manage an equine breeding and training farm. I began training for a yearling filly and continued training for a four year old gelding. Training for the filly consisted of regular haltering and leading, grooming and farrier introduction, surcingle introduction, trail obstacles, and ended with showing in a halter class. Training for the gelding consisted of regular long lining and riding, both working on an introduction to patterns and poles, stopping, and proper collection.I learned and practiced how to handle a stallion for collection as well as the AV, how to read sperm count, how to inseminate a mare, and how to perform a vaginal lavage. In addition to equine management, I got certified in operating a skid steer and artificial insemination for cows.I had several opportunities to present and teach to the public, including at Miner Institute's Farm Days for Fifth Graders, the Miner Institute Open House, and the Almanzo Wilder Homestead Event.
