My PhD dissertation examined how health news is discursively co-produced by journalists, biomedical stakeholders, and the audience. Using a linguistic ethnographic perspective, it aimed to uncover complex dynamics of this production process, as producing health news is more than just translating scientific terminology into journalistic discourse that are accessible for laypeople audiences. Health news production does not just happen in the newsroom by journalists, but is a matter intense co-production by journalists, audiences, biomedical and other stakeholders. As a result and at the same time as a prerequisite for this co-production, the practices of each of these stakeholders have seeped into the practices of the other stakeholders. Each of these sets of practices have been increasingly hybridized and entangled with one another. Moreover, producing health news also involves constructing what health is, how health issues should be attended to, what news is, what (good) journalism is, who the authority has to speak about health and about solutions for health issues, both on an individual and on a societal and institutional level, and who has the responsibility to execute these solutions. These constructions all both reflect and (re)produce dominant discourses and perspectives on these issues in society. Show less
