A beloved coffee spot of mine, BTP became a useful work experience, undertaken during the first term of my postgraduate degree. As a result of hockey commitments and university deadlines, my hours were limited, preventing me from progressing much within the business. However, my role involved serving customers and ensuring their comfort, dealing with any inquiries or complaints in a friendly and efficient manner. Working in a fast-paced and busy environment could be highly demanding, mentally and physically, coupled with the quietness of early mornings or late afternoons. BTP maintains excellent values concerning sustainability, particularly with its hashtag, 'no excuse for single use'. Though their restriction of single use coffee cups had a damaging effect on their sales, and overall profit, their ability to surpass this failure highlights their dedication to sustainability, which is something that should be admired and inspirational to other businesses. Risk analyst - intelligence and advisory services

During the second term of my postgraduate degree, I undertook a work placement, committing between 10-30 hours per week for 5 weeks. My time management skills were pushed during this time, managing this highly demanding placement, alongside end of term deadlines and the final stages of the hockey season. This placement involved formulating country profiles for 'high' and 'very-high' risk countries. Open source intelligence using various sources, allowed me to compile information which aligned with a designated risk score. This required dealing with extensive information and detecting bias in the sources, to subsequently provide a profile summary and list of core risks. The purpose of these profiles was to provide businesses with risk analysis, highlighting the risk of ventures into those countries. Ultimately involving in-depth insight and business advice, while bridging the gap between human rights and business. This placement was intriguing, and has allowed me develop personally and gain greater insight into the business world, and its interplay with international development. Personal skills gained through this placement: 1. Remote research, working independently under pressing time constraints2. Analysis - seeing the bigger picture and recognising risk 3. Detecting bias, and writing objectively 4. Communication within the team and asking for advice when needed 5. Time management - completing required work alongside university studies Show less

      Research intern

Within the final term of my university degree, I undertook a research internship with Andrews Charitable Trust. During this time I focused on the question: 'In crisis situations, ideas that empower poor communities to bridge the gaps between emergency shelter and the rebuilding of more durable permanent housing.'This research project required me to network with NGOs and international organisations, including the UNHCR, ipaSwitxboard, Politas Consulting and freelance activists. Communications taking place over Skype calls across time zones was an excellent opportunity to engage with experts in the field, gaining insights through thoughtful interviews. Sector specific skills which I gained include: 1. Researching areas such as post-conflict emergency shelter, issues of human trafficking, domestic violence and land rights. 2. Research through open source, and direct interview over email, Skype, WhatsApp and telephone. 3. Understanding the process of charity grant making, and conducting a case for recommendations 4. Assessing the link between poverty and housing and recognising the limitations in the transitional housing space. 5. Taking on board the company's core values, and providing intel into potential investment. Show less

      Recruitment resourcer (temporary) - bakkavor

Working within the recruitment team for Bakkavor Foods. Dealing with the recruitment for 6 Bakkavor sites, namely in the London region. The role involves conducting telephone interviews, and progressing candidates through the application process via an online test and invitation to an assessment centre. As the majority of the roles being recruited for are entry level, factory operative roles, the job has allowed me to engage with a different section of the workforce, while interacting with people with limited English proficiency. Skills that I developed during this job include my knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office, my telephone manner and communication with a variety of people whose mother tongue is not English, problem solving with site closures and difficult candidates, as well as conducting my own analysis of call trends and the business model.
