  I observed the importance and value of having a PA in a private practice to enhance the daily operations and access to patient care. I was afforded the opportunity to watch a PA complete orthopedic exams, formulate proper diagnoses and treatment plan and communicate this plan to a patient. I was exposed to the significance of effective patient interaction and clear communication, pre and post-operative care, cast application, surgical routines, suture removal, x- ray interpretation and the importance of collaboration between a physician and a PA.   I observed orthopedic examinations and the steps taken to determine a diagnosis that lead to the treatment provided by the PA. I was educated on taking complete patient history and reviewing x-ray and MRI reports. I learned the use of electronic medical records and I witnessed treatments using intra-articular steroid and hyaluronic acid injections the PA used in delivering treatment. I observed the PA’s role in the delivery of quality care, communication, patient education and patient advocacy.

  Through this internship, I have become well- versed in assessing a culturally diverse population of pediatric patients and interacting with their parents/guardians. During each visit, I obtain the patient’s vitals, their chief complaint and its onset. I assist the nursing staff in obtaining blood for analyses then running CBC, cholesterol tests, and urinalysis. I run rapid strep tests, plate samples onto blood agar, and accurately read results. I documented patient care, results and ordered laboratory tests using electronic medical records. Show less
