    • Norwich Union International

      Jan 1998 - Dec 1998
      Server Support Specialist

Short term contract positionSupporting a network with around 6700 users. Working as part of a 12 man NT Server Team supporting approximately 300 servers. Support included mostly Windows NT 4 Workstation/Server and Exchange 5.0 (building and supporting) with some Windows 3.11, Windows 95, OS/2, MS Mail, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office 97 and various SQL databases. The users were mostly in Norwich spread over about 8 different offices but we also supported numerous smaller offices all around the country. Providing 2nd/3rd line support in a busy and high-pressure environment, any server or user down time would obviously have a major effect in this type of company. I worked with some real NT gurus whilst at Norwich Union and gained a lot of experience. Show less

    • The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company

      Dec 1998 - Aug 2000
      IT Consultant

Short term contractInitially Supporting a Novell 4.11 Server with Arcserve. The clients were Windows 3.1x and 95 connected over IPX/SPX on Token Ring data type 1 cabling. There was also a POP3 email server connecting out via ISDN. Also supporting IBM AS/400 with some terminals connected by Twinax but mostly PC’s with IBM Client Access software. We then migrated 450 users onto a Windows NT4 network. This included building NT storage, application, proxy, print and RAS servers, Exchange 5.5 email server and rolling out Windows 95 and NT Workstation clients including Office 97. All hardware was Compaq. New CAT5 (voice and data) cabling with Cisco switches and fibre optic backbones. We used TCP/IP over the network so DHCP and WINS were configured. The storage and Exchange servers were configured with RAID 5. Also moving from POP3 email/proxy server onto Exchange 5.5 email server and separate proxy server. This included migrating mailboxes, setting up email addresses and Internet connections, configuring DNS, etc. I was involved in all aspects of the rollout including planning network structure, building servers, building PC images for desktops and laptops, setting up backup routines on Veritas Backup Exec, planning and implementing rollouts in our head office and at a number of smaller sites and creation of documentationAfter the rollout was complete we rebuilt the entire Salesmen’s laptops to standard, configured and tested RAS dial up and gave necessary training. After this I stayed for a few further months providing 2nd/3rd line support for the new network and carrying out server upgrades. I continued to support the AS/400 throughout the rollout. In the last couple of months at Scotts I gained some SMS administration and Citrix Winframe/Metaframe experience. Show less
