  I served proudly for over 10 years. My expereince has proved to be fascinating to both in job interviews and with students. My education was as extensive as my traveles that took me half-way across the world three times in both directions. How does anyone talk about what they did in any 10 year span much less one in which I went through three deployments into a war zone.   I taught English at two differnt primary schools (4th grade mostly, but I also taught 5th grade and some 3rd and even 2nd graders) and two differnt high schools from May of 2013 to June 2014. I was then subcontracted out to a kindergarten from August 2013 to May 2014. During this time I taught the ABC's and the sounds they represent while also reading and playing with them.

  I teach high scoolers English as a second language first for a month in Nanjing (where JESIE is located) and then fulfilled my contract in Suining from September 2014 through June 2015. One thing I did at Suining was administer the British Version of the English Proficiency Test known as the IELTS test. Chinese students and maybe all foreign students (even Americans) need to pass this test much like foreign students need to pass the TOEFL Test to study at American Universities. For this reason I was tasked to administer the test to a class of 45 Chinese Students, and share the results with the districts. The test is administered in four parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. I actually administered this twice or more accurately I administered the writing, listening and reading parts of the test a second time. It was decided that the speaking portion was not to be administered. I actually disagreed with this decision because the most important part of learning a foreign language. Perhaps it was equally important that I make a case for the large amount of time the speaking part of the test takes. As much as I didn’t agree with the decision I did as I was ordered. Show less

  On thing that was expected of me at almost every school I have ever subbed in is taking attendance. While this may be considered a mundane bureaucratic matter I us it to establish a report and respect with the students I am trusted with. I begin by pointing out my name ‘Mr Brostrom’ on the board and saying “while I am sure to mispronounce some of your names you can have fun with mine.” I have to confess I enjoy the banter between teacher and student, of course I want to limit it for many reasons, but it is important to establish trust and good will. Having the task of reading off the names is a good excuse to move on no matter how much we may be enjoying ourselves. As I call out the names it is important to me to do my best in properly pronouncing the names to the best of my ability; it doesn’t matter that I have been to 21 different countries I know I am in California where there is sure to be a name that I will hack and rather badly at that. When this happens it is important to me to ask how it is properly pronounced and usually what country it is from. This is done for my curiosity but it does further establish understanding. I have even gone as far as to talk about the American leaving the regional conflicts behind. At times I have told kids they are here now and they are going to make America great. Of course I have to limit this in order to provide as much time as possible for learning. I have taken this administrative task used it to put the students into the proper mindset for learning.
