      Co-taught art to four and five year olds for six weekly lessons. Gained the patience needed to teach that age group by breaking down questions and procedures into manageable increments. Learned not to underestimate young students’ abilities while still setting reachable goals for them. Introduced unfamiliar techniques such as monotyping while familiarizing them with art criticism and art history.

      Field Experience

      Taught three two-day lessons to court-ordered students ranging from 14-17 years of age. Learned the importance of enforcing policies and being aware of procedures from counting all the supplies I brought to being mindful of how each student used those supplies. Also learned the benefits of consistent discipline throughout my time there. Trained myself to over plan and be flexible since I never knew when I would be losing or gaining students.

      Taught two two-day lessons and co-taught one two-day lesson to students with multiple handicaps and a separate class of students with behavioral disorders. Learned how necessary time management with short periods and students that benefit greatly from routines and clear transitions. Became familiar with students’ needs and adapted lessons accordingly.

      Taught art to grades 4th - 6th as well as a special needs class totaling 21classes. Mastered a challenging ten day rotating schedule. Incorporated a technology lesson into each class by using a class set of laptops, Smart Board, and projector to teach students how to use Microsoft Word to make posters as well as how to make Op Art and tessellations with Microsoft Paint. Incorporated collaboration among students whether through critiques, discussions, or art production.

      Taught Art II, III, IV, and Photography to 9th -12th graders. Superior differentiated instruction was necessary considering one block had students in Art II, III, and IV. Many lessons were driven by social issues which showed students how art can communicate messages that relate to their everyday lives. High order thinking was a priority for each lesson as well which was evident in their artwork as well as reflective journal entries. Reviewed different Photoshop 5 texts to be used the following semester to guide curriculum. Displayed students’ artwork in the annual Spring Art Show. Show less

Participated in art competitions such as Concept Schools’ Art Show in Columbus and The Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling Calendar Contest where our school had winners in each.       Instructed 6-8 grade students in a rigorous art curriculum designed by myself and four other art teachers in the district. Kept regular contact with high school art teachers to ensure that my lessons were aligned with content my students would be learning in the future. Taught an advanced eighth grade class that participated in Canton’s First Friday event this past May as well as county-wide art competitions. Received an “accomplished” rating according to the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System which was determined through principal observations and student performance. Collaborated with other art teachers in the district to create student learning objectives that would help measure student progress. Organized art activities at after school events to gain fundraising for our school and art program. Show less
