Story#1: Paying Attention and Using Intuition Saves Lives!CLC Nurse Nneka Nweke told a great story.Nurse Nweke re-created the moment in which a part of her live would change forever.Every day, she explains, she rounds with all the patients, even if they are not in her caseload. In that way, she can keep up with the patients’ baselines and is able to quickly recognize a patient’s subtle changes. On this March day, Nurse Nweke was the first Nurse in CLC to recognize the first CLC COVID-19 patient. She learned this patient very well and knows how this patient’s baseline dementia looks like. However, on this day, something was very odd. The patient said to her: “I can’t breathe”.Nurse Nweke learned that difficulty breathing was a hallmark symptom of COVID-19 so she decided that she was not going to let this pass by.That even though this patient did not have fever, she knew to immediately notified the Nurse Practitioner. This Nurse expressed that she insisted for a COVID-19 test was completed on this Veteran. She expressed gratitude for Nurse Educator Kate, who she said taught her the process of transporting COVID-19 patients. This was crucial learning as the CLC was not prepared yet to complete the testing on-site.Instead, any patient suspected of COVID, like this one, was transported outside in the courtyard for testing. The test came back positive and Nurse Nweke understands that she may have saved many lives – staff and Veterans alike- by acting swiftly and using her high level of intuition.Friday Thank You! You are a true inspiration! Show less
