  • About me

Founding Director of Bristol Nano Dynamics, Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellow

  • Education

    • University of Bristol

      1999 - 2003
Master of Science (MSc) Physics Upper Second Class Honours

Activities and Societies: Jive Dancing, Pottery, Photography, Gaming, Cycling, Badminton, Swimming

    • University of Bristol

      2003 - 2007
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Nanoscience PhD

Activities and Societies: Development of the fastest atomic force microscope in the world - capable of over 1,200 frames per second. I focussed strongly on materials science and instrument development for nanoscale microscopy.

  • Experience

    • University of Bristol

      Sept 2003 - Sept 2006
      PhD in Nanoscience

My research concerned the development and application of the fastest atomic force microscope in the world to the measurement and fabrication of nanoscale structures. This work was performed under the supervision of Professor Mervyn Miles FRS, and served as an excellent introduction to the wider scanning probe microscopy community.

    • University of Bristol

      Apr 2007 - Oct 2012
      Research Associate

Development and application of high-speed atomic force microscopy techniques to diverse samples from biochemisty to materials science.Development of novel user interface techniques and controls including: multitouch GUIs, haptic pens, gloves and joysticks and advanced data visualisation methods such as: stereoscopic and head-tracked 3D representations.Supervision of undergraduate, Masters, PhD and high-speed instrumentation group activities.

    • Virginia Commonwealth University

      Jan 2013 - Nov 2013
      Independent Contractor

Delivered high-speed atomic force microscopy and data analysis hardware and software optimised for rapid and high-sensitivity detection and measurement of millions of individual biomolecules.

    • University of Bristol

      Feb 2014 - Aug 2018
Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellow

Development of a commercial prototype high-speed scanning probe microscope and demonstration of key market opportunities, including: next generation gene sequencing; quality assurance of novel 2d nanomaterials and; full lifetime assessment of wear in critical metal components for the nuclear industry.

    • Bristol Nano Dynamics

      Jun 2015 - now
      Director

Bristol Nano Dynamics is an SME specializing in nanoscale imaging services and products. The key technology we offer is Dynamic Scanning Probe Microscopy (D-SPM) which is suitable for both real-time observation of nanoscale processes and for generating nanometre resolution maps of centimetre square sample surfaces. This high-throughput capability enables applications such as next generation gene sequencing and industry scale quality assurance of nanomaterials and nanocoatings.
