  U.S. Navy Tech Core, Fire Controlman A & C Schools MK 15 Phalanx Close In Weapon System

  Activities and Societies: Performed preventative and corrective maintenance on Close In Weapon System (CIWS). Daily, Weekly, Quarterly and Annual Maintenance system checks requiring precision and accuracy. Executed pre-aim action calibration (PACFire) testing aligning gun bore sight to track antenna beam (Qualification requires 4 weeks hands on training). Executed full disassemble of gun barrel housing and full rebuild (Qualification requires 2 weeks hands on training). The Close In Weapon System (CIWS) is a $35 million dollar weapon system primarily used for ship's defense by the U.S. Navy's Combat Fleet. CIWS is capable of dispensing 4,500 rounds per minute, and has an effective range of five nautical miles. Assuming optimum performance the CIWS can strike a high speed moving target (>1200 mph), with a 1.5 square inch cross section, at 2,000 yards.
