  As a board member, I participate actively in WONRA activities. The White Oak-New Riverkeeper Alliance is a not-for-profit, 501C(3) corporation that was founded in 2008. At the time there was a strong need for a program that would restore and protect our local rivers. Therefore, a group of concerned citizens joined together to create an alliance for strong advocacy. We are members of Waterkeeper Alliance, an international organization comprised of groups working on local water quality issues, but also partnering together to support larger regional and national issues.   I worked as a marine science educator, in both indoor and outdoor settings to educate public and private groups about the importance of conservation of marine resources. Programs included: barrier island ecology, water quality labs, herpetology (including sea turtles, alligators, and snakes), squid and fish dissections, bird and mammal interactions, and more. I developed and modified programs as needed to provide the most effective educational experiences for youth and adults. I developed and led toddler programs and camps for school age children, and led kayak and stand up paddle board tours in the Bogue Sound. Other responsibilities included facilities and equipment maintenance, and assisting in other areas of the Aquarium as needed. Show less

  Water Quality/Agriculture Program Assistant

  Serve as field and lab technician for the Onslow County Water Quality Program. Duties include: collecting water samples at 28 sites around the county and taking readings of Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, Specific Conductivity, and Salinity in the field; analyzing the samples for enterococci bacteria back in the lab; maintaining lab equipment, including calibration, cleaning, and troubleshooting, data recordings, and Quality Control; packaging and sending off water samples to the lab at NC State for further analysis. Additionally, I enter the collected data in a master spreadsheet where it is then analyzed. Additional duties include assisting with agriculture and horticulture projects including but not limited to Master Gardener work parties, maintaining landscaping around the facility, assisting on farm visits to determine yield of crops, and providing assistance to the Horticulture and Crops Agents as needed.
