  As Chief Learning Scientist, I provide leadership and integration of learning sciences to professional and workforce development education programs. This includes developing critical personalized online learning for employees, design centers, and global partners. I am assigned to support engineering education research and workforce development within The Boeing Company’s Leadership, Learning, and Organizational Capability Team. This microcosm of capabilities forms a pseudo-global engineering company that gives students the opportunity to work in relatively the same environment, bound by the same constraints that they would experience in industry. The students, under the mentorship of faculty coaches, are designing, building, and flying an agricultural Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to increase crop yield, while at the same time learning industry-required skills in a blended learning environment. CorpU, the leading talent development insight and education provider, presented the award during a gala dinner on May 15th as part of the 13th annual Global Leadership Congress at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Award Details:Our starting point for a collaborative partnership focused on the development, implementation and research of an 8-hour introductory course on composite materials that was designed for Boeing employees. In phase one, an informal phase of our work, Boeing researchers and learning scientists observed the company’s course development activities and the course as taught by company experts. In phase two, company experts and learning scientists collaboratively designed and implemented a quasi-experimental study that compared two approaches to teaching the composites course. Boeing researchers and managers saw the value of exploring new pedagogies and learning arrangements that could enhance the company’s goals. Researchers within the engineering educational and learning sciences fields are increasingly exploring ways to enhance learning by bridging formal and informal learning (Bransford, et al., 2006; Shutt, Phillips;Tzou & Bell, 2010).
