Master of Science - MS Biological Sciences

Activities and Societies: Sustainability Council My research project investigates the role that environmental gradients play in a key functional trait of riparian trees. I looked at functional traits in a native tree (Salix amygdaloides) and an invasive tree (Elaeagnus angustifolia) in riparian ecosystems. Understanding the effects of environment on plant strategies and traits has broader implications in restoration project planning as well as increasing the predictive power of functional traits in community ecology.

    • Missouri Botanical Garden

      May 2015 - Jul 2015
      Research for Undergraduate Experience Intern

My project while interning at Missouri Botanical Garden involved co-writing a revision of the plant genus Stenospermation for Central America. My job included studying herbarium specimens from Central American countries and updating species descriptions from my observations, as well as editing the introduction and dichotomous key. The revision includes information on the history of study, summary of phylogenetic relationships, generic-level taxonomic relationships, morphological and anatomical summaries, notes on cytology, information on flowering behavior, phenology, pollination observations, biogeographical observations, and the economic importance of the genus. I also analyzed the variance of my herbarium specimen measurements using R. Show less

    • Chicago Botanic Garden

      May 2016 - Oct 2016
      Conservation and Land Management Intern

The main focus of this internship was generating monitoring reports for the federally threatened Sclerocactus glaucus (Colorado hookless cactus) populations in the BLM field office. We utilized handheld GPS devices and ArcGIS mapping software for monitoring and report writing. Other assignments included completing Proper Functioning Condition (PFC) assessments of riparian areas. During this time, the BLM sponsored my participation in a 3 day riparian plant identification workshop. As part of the Chicago Botanic Garden's Seeds of Success program, we collected seeds in accordance with program's procedures. In line with the restoration mission of Seeds of Success, I created a seed collection plan for the Grand Junction field office based on Sage-Grouse conservation needs. I received additional herbarium training through the botanic garden, and one of our projects involved organizing, mounting and labeling our offices herbarium specimens.I assisted with many other projects as well. We completed assessment inventory & monitoring (AIM) strategy implementation in Gunnison and Greater sage-grouse habitat. I worked with the Western Colorado Conservation Corps to safely remove Russian olive and Tamarisk from Sclerocactus glaucus habitat, and assessing future removal sites for planning future projects. My team helped the Colorado Natural Areas Program complete a survey of threatened Penstemon debilis. I assisted with fishery inventories, river patrol and permit inspections, sagebrush establishment research; surveys of Great Basin spadefoot toad and Canyon Treefrog, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Burrowing owl, Mexican Spotted Owl, and annual bat and bird monitoring. This internship was made possible by the partnership between Chicago Botanic Garden and the Bureau of Land Management. • Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands

      May 2018 - Sept 2018
      Forestry Technician

This first project in this role consisted of generating exploratory invasive plant species data by conducting highest priority invasive plant species surveys in disturbed areas on a military base and collecting general abundance for each species present. We created a report for the invasive plant project for the Alaska Exotic Plants Information Clearinghouse project. I helped accomplish this by developing hosted feature layers to enable easy data collection in ArcGIS Collector, and carrying out the data collection. This data was submitted to the Alaska Exotic Plants Information Clearinghouse (AKEPIC). In addition to that project, we completed Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) surveys and reestablished burned plots. We accomplished this by operating ATVs and hiking with forestry equipment to remote locations. The last project I had involved collecting vegetation ground truth data using the Alaska Vegetation Classification system and entering the data for comparison with the remote sensing classification. Staffing Coordinator

This job involved coordinating schedules for per diem nurses at hospitals and kept credentialing documents up to date. This required communicating effectively with nurses and hospital staff to ensure schedules were up to date and both parties were aware of any changes. This ensured the hospital had the coverage it needed on any given day, and that the nurses had regular work if they wanted it. The credentialing element of this job involved sending regular reminders to nurses about expiring credentials and reformatting documents and general data and database management. This position helped me develop my communication, organization, and database managements skills. • University of Denver

      Sept 2020 - Nov 2022
      Graduate Teaching Assistant

I operated as the project manager of my research study, by creating and implementing the experimental design, and leading a field team of 2 funded undergraduates and 13 additional volunteers in scheduled field surveys and lab work. We collected biological specimens and recorded environmental information for invasive Russian olive and native Peachleaf willow trees. We collected, weighed, and measured functional leaf traits for ~1800 leaves. I utilized ArcGIS Online and hosted feature layers in ArcGIS Collector to randomly sample trees from sites and I extracted additional landscape level site data from raster layers in ArcGIS Pro. We performed statistical analysis and data management in R and JMP. Linear mixed effects models and model selection methods were used to analyze the differences of environment on native and invasive plant functional traits. In my teaching role I communicated concepts foundational to the scientific method, ecology, evolution, and biology in weekly 3-hour lab sections with ~40 students a quarter. Students were guided students through using lab equipment and performing lab procedures such as microscopy, dissections, measuring chemical concentrations, compass use, animal & plant identification, anatomy, and physiology. I graded lab reports and assignments, and taught the following courses: Sustaining Life, I – Lab, Evolution, Heredity, and Biodiversity – Lab, Physiological Systems – Lecture, General Ecology - Lab, Molecules to Humankind - Lab.
