      Designed and implemented the International Food Safety Short Course training program at Michigan State University with an annual event. For 15 years more than 300 working professionals from over 60 countries have attended the International Food Safety Short Course on the campus of MSU. Dr. Weir was instrumental in bringing together experts to speak on current topics from industry, supporting academic and government stakeholder forums – and to carry-on a unique learning experience for the global community. In addition, she co-leads MSU’s International Food Law- Europe study abroad program. A best in class food science study program that provides interactions with international food law specialists at the World Trade Organization (WTO), food policy advisors at the UN World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and visits to relevant European food manufacturing sites.       Provided strategic regulatory input as innovation team member and scientific justification for product developers, clinical trial reviewers, and developed final product dossiers for local registration.• Monitored global regulatory environment, resulting in authorization of first Article 14 health claim in the EU (“DHA contributes to the visual development of infants”).• Managed successful US GRAS and EU novel ingredient filing, resulting in 20 product registrations and a substantiated message to support children’s global business plan. (Regulatory strategy included not only the process of filing but in some cases convening an expert panel; leading science-based discussions with regulatory officials; establishing internal regulatory staff training; and post market compliance with a science-based substantiation document.)• Created advanced professional development training programs to meet a gap in skill level in regulatory and nutrition staff across all markets thereby establishing company expertise to meet business goals; topics included: US and International food law and regulations, food safety, and pediatric nutrition policy.• Created the MJN Scientific Lecture Series and the 1st International Internship; established Food Safety Advisory panels; bringing new insights from subject matter experts relevant to support innovation goals and inform Executive Leadership. • Interpreted scientific data associated with product registrations; identified important issues affecting authorizations across global markets, and communicated mitigation strategy. • Expanded public private partnerships to implement food safety training programs across markets and strengthen local external networks.       In October, 2015 the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) in Battle Creek has been named the National Coordination Center for Food Safety Training by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Institute will oversee development and implementation of national food safety training programs for small farmers and businesses across the country. International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) is improving public health by building competency-based training and certification systems and cultivating leadership for the food protection community worldwide. Meeting Training Needs for Better Food Protection In order to address the emerging issues of a safer worldwide food supply, the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) was created in 2009. Based in Battle Creek, Michigan, IFPTI is a model for private-public partnerships that address public health needs and collaborates with industry, academia, federal, state and international governments, and other organizations. IFPTI builds competency-based training and certification systems for U.S. and international public- and private-sector food safety professionals. The training is designed around curricula frameworks that are aligned with workforce competencies from the food protection community. Show less
