      Activities and Societies: Graduate Council, Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee As a Master's student through the biology program I focus on behavioral ecology. I have conducted research on two rodent species that are found in the jungles of Panama. I have looked at the behavioral interactions between these two species and the influence of seasonal resource abundance on their interactions. This research was conducted through the help of Frostburg State University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

      Clean and fed a colony of tamarin monkeys and performed behavioral studies with them. Coached collegiate level athletes with specialization in the horizontal jumps. I teach introductory biology for Major's biology and non-major's biology. This entails preparing for the lab, teaching the lab, holding office hours to meet with students, and assigning and grading laboratory assignments. I have also maintained the mammalogy laboratory specimens through organizing the specimens within the specimen room. Lastly, I do laboratory prep for organismal biology. For this course I prepare slides and specimens each week for the labs.

      I introduced and trained new volunteers in a variety of volunteer positions. I coordinated volunteers to staff offsite events, outreach events, and in shelter services such as animal care, counseling, and front desk tasks. I greeted visitors and assisted with adoptions. This included counseling and preparing all of the paperwork required for adoptions. I entered animal medical information including surgeries, vaccinations, preventatives, and exams into an all purpose data management system.

In this role I assist in managing several adoption counselors and kennel techs on their daily tasks. The tasks that I supervise include all aspects of animal husbandry, record keeping for each animal and adoption, and staff interactions with customers. I also assist in providing enrichment for the animals. Other duties include developing and utilizing SOP’s, training staff, and coordinating with other supervisors on space and large scale transport of animals.       As a medical technician at a county shelter I have assisted in medical intake protocols. This includes blood draws, vaccinations, deworming, initial behavioral evaluations, and creating animal identification and files for their stay at the shelter. I have also administered daily medications and have assisted in emergency medical situations. I have worked in a clinic setting where we work with clients during appointments. We also rotate working at the reception desk which can entail in person and on the phone interactions, scheduling, and handling the register. Another large role has been to prep animals for varying surgeries and to assist during complicated surgeries. I am skilled in the use of anesthesia for animals along with post surgery recovery. Other skills include prescription filling, inputting exams, and maintaining medical records for patients. We also have volunteers that do assist with some medical tasks which I have also helped train and guide. Show less As an adoption counselor I work mainly with the dogs at this facility. I assist with behavioral evaluations, meet and greets between animals, and the marketing of these animals. With potential adopters I am often assisting in finding the perfect match for their home and educating the adopter on the best care practices for that animal. Other aspects of this job include sales and retail, handling payments, and extensive desk work during adoption outcomes. I am also the heartworm treatment counselor and assist all adopters of heartworm positive dogs in their process of heartworm treatment. This includes providing educational material, presentations on the treatment, scheduling treatment, and maintaining communication throughout the process.
