In 2002 it had a turnover in excess of US$3.3b, after tax profit of US$1.1b and staff of 4000. The major business entity of the Group providing almost all of the profit was CLP Power for which I was the Managing Director until my return to the UK in 2002.As Managing Director of CLP Power I was responsible for all aspects of the profitability, operation, development and competitive positioning of CLP Power to provide a vertically integrated electricity service to 2 million customers within the Kowloon and New Territories areas of Hong Kong. The role included Board direction and management of several joint venture companies: two with ExxonMobil were the only operations worldwide where they had a majority shareholding yet did not take management control and those with Chinese mainland authorities included their civil nuclear programme at Daya Bay. Typically CLP Power’s 3600 staff handled annual revenue of US$3.2b yielding an after tax profit of US$1.1b and completed capital projects of US$660M p.a.In my role as a CLP Holdings main board Director and member CLP Holdings Executive Committee, I had responsibilities to develop and oversee execution of the Group’s strategy of diversification and expansion and in particular to develop new Hong Kong based businesses and provide active support from CLP Power to newly acquired overseas energy businesses.
