      Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer

      One year industrial placement consisting of two six month placements; first placement spent in Mechanical Design and second placement spent in Materials.Produced a design standard detailing the process for designing a particular type of component.Developed hardware for design-aid testing and supported the manufacturing process for this hardware.Developed proposals for concepts to improve the EMC and environmental performance of an MBDA product and a plan for the implementation of these design changes.Evaluated methods and suppliers for the joining of metal and ceramic components for high performance applications. This activity was conducted under significant time pressure coming as a result of deadlines for hardware availability for trials.Ran a 3 month R&D project centred on reducing costs for a component. Project involved both materials and mechanical design elements.Investigated the state of the art and technology readiness levels for some novel technologies, exploring their future relevance to MBDA.       Responsible for a range of static and dynamic analyses to support the qualification of an airframe for flightCollaborated with design engineers to optimise an airframe structure, delivering a design capable of withstanding significantly increased loads with no impact to weight or available internal volume Mechanical lead for a six-month phase of a research and development programme, managing a budget of £75,000Took input from collaborators to produce a series of feasibility studies to inform the direction of future phasesDelivered findings in a report provided to the MoD and secured funding for future phasesEvaluated suppliers and developed the insertion strategy for a novel materials technology External placement in the Strategy Group.Analysed the geopolitical and economic situations in several key countries for MBDA to contribute to the development of strategies for future sales campaigns.Developed a database to track and assist in the forecasting of global defence spending.Analysed the impact of several possible 'Brexit' scenarios on the business. Responsible for a range of mechanical design activities from the concept stage to detailed tolerance studies.Completed a feasibility study and proposed an insertion route for a novel manufacturing technology offering savings in excess of £1 million over the life of the project. Presented findings to the Chief Engineer.Modelled a subsystem using Creo Mechanism and managed a programme of tests to validate the results.
