  Research Internship (IPSF Student Exchange Programme)

  Performed research activities in Biotechnology with a focus on Algae Biotechnology at the Enzyme Biotechnology Lab at TUMS. - Learnt how to prepare different mediums suitable for cultivation of Algae. - Studied the algae growth by employing haemocytometer for cell counting with ELISA and growth curve were plotted. - Harvested algae and extracted desired metabolites from freeze-dried micro-algae by adopting liquid extraction method, and metabolites were identified by using TLC. - Total carotenoids and fucoxanthin production were determined and plotted.- Standard curve of glucose, protein and canola oil curve were plotted and total carbohydrates, total proteins and total lipids of algae were determined respectively.- Participated in lectures on the usefulness of algae and their use as food supplements, medicine and for waste water treatment. Also, I was taught how extracting desired metabolite from algae can be upscaled for commercial use, by the use of different devices and methods. Also, I started writing a mini review on algae-based pharmaceutical products during my time at TUMS which will be completed soon. Show less
