      Selwyn Youth Council Deputy Chairman

In 2020, when I was a year 12 student, I had the privilege of serving as the Deputy Chairman for the Selwyn Youth Council. This duty that I was elected for meant that I had to be responsible for assisting on committee meetings and ensuring everyone was present and on time. I was given responsibilities that were delegated to me by the chairman of the Youth Council. These responsibilities consisted of teamwork, honesty, reliability and most importantly, accountability. Because I was Deputy Chairman, I was able to gain strong connections within my region's local council that I still maintain til this day. This role required a lot of face to face consultation which taught me the importance of gaining excellent communication skills which has helped me with my jobs! Show less

I was entrusted to be the voice of the students, I had the opportunity to join various sub committees such as the uniform committee where we designed the new uniform of the school and also the disciplinary committee. This was such an amazing opportunity as I got see the behind the scenes works that go about operating a school. It was a privilege being able to have been both a student & board member at the same time as I was able to gain new experiences and develop a greater understanding for school staff members. I learnt lots of valuable skills such as time management skills, honesty and face to face interactions with lots of different kinds of people. It was an amazing opportunity to be apart! Show less

Chairman of the Selwyn Youth Council

In 2021, when I was in my final year of high-school, I was elected from my fellow youth councillors to be Chairman of the Selwyn Youth Council! Having acted as the Deputy chairman the preceding year (2020), I was confident with my abilities to lead a full committee filled with courages young leaders within Selwyn! Being chairman was a bigger step up, and required more responsibilities. I learnt valuable life skills such as leadership and how to delegate responsibilities to all members in the team evenly. I oversaw important projects such as the remodel of the Leeston Library/Community centre and was in charge of presenting a report directly to the Council of Selwyn on what the local residents would like to see in their new community centre. It was an awesome experience, and I was glad to have my led my team especially during covid. There were so many so many projects that I helped the youth council oversee, and it was a privilege to have been their leader. Below is a direct quote from the Selwyn elected Councilman of the Ellesmere Ward;“Kia ora tatou katoa,I have known Inaki for sometime having first met him as an outstanding student at Ellesmere College and also as the student representative on the school board.I have known him to be a friendly, welcoming, supportive and loyal young man. He finds his happiness in helping others. Especially when it comes to overcoming challenges in the mental health space. His own personal experiences help guide others to seek support and safety in his company.I have no doubt Inaki will go on to continue to be an incredible community member a valuable taonga for our young people and a good friend.Toitu te hinengaro ki te Rangatahi / Stand strong the vitality of our young people.” Show less
