Engineering Geological Characterization of Quartzite Aggregates From Some Selected Quarries in AccraThe quality of aggregate is very important in the construction industry. Quartzite aggregates found in the Akwapim -Togo series are used for a wide range of purposes some of which include decorations, concrete production in the Greater Accra Region. The quartzites in the Togo series are different taking into consideration their strength, mineralogical composition and other properties. Owing to the fact that these quartzite aggregates in the Togo series have not been characterized and properly distinguished, it was observed that some quarry operators combine various types of quartzite aggregates before selling them to their prospective customers. This has the potential to affect the overral strength of the aggregates in concrete since the individual aggregates possess different strengths and engineering characteristics. Quartzite aggregates in the Togo series were taken from various quarries in Accra, and their strength and engineering characteristics assessed. Mechanical tests including Aggregate impact test, Aggregate crushing test, los angeles abrasion test, water absorption test, ten percent fine test were conducted on the various quartzite aggregates to assess their strengths. Mortar bar test was also performed in order to investigate the potential alkali-silica reactivity of the quartzite aggregates. The engineering properties of the quartzite aggregates showed that , the aggregate impact value and the aggregate crushing value ranged from 11% to 35% and 16.93% to 27.64% respectively. The los angeles abrasion value also ranged from 19% to 59% , the flakiness and elongation index ranged from 11% to 84%. The water absorption values also ranged from 0.10% to 1.15%. For the 10% fines , the values ranged from 7% to 17%. Show less

The relevance of research in Geosciences cannot be underestimated as it provides much insights into understanding our precious planet, including the resources she contains. My final research project was on seismic velocity studies of some wells in the Tano Basin, South-Western Ghana. This project was in collaboration with Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Geophysics department due to the academic and industrial connection between University of Ghana and GNPC. Lot of uncertainties engulf the oil and gas discovery in Ghana, specifically the Tano Basin, which has rendered inadequate exploitation of petroleum resources in the basin. Therefore, the project sought to unravel and decode some of the reservoir uncertainties by building velocity models and graphs using Petrel software and excel worksheet. The models were used to study and analyze the various intervals under investigation (water column, sea bed and the reservoir). Further to the research, it was revealed that the Turonian reservoir unit has heterogeneities and uncertainties. Hence, it informed drilling and reservoir engineers on possible problems to be encountered within the interval during exploration, appraisal, development and other engineering works in the reservoir. Again, results from my research affirmed the porosity content of the reservoir (17% - 22%) and affirmed the lithological make-up of the reservoir. This project was conducted on check shot data provided by GNPC. Show less
