In this position, I partner with diverse teams to redesign medical school curriculum in alignment with the requirements of digital natives. I implement an interleaved clinical and basic science course of study and revise and enhance medical student basic science courses for Duke School of Medicine. I also assess first year exam questions to ensure compliance with the National Board of Medical Examiners best practices and draft new basic science exam questions as clinical vignettes, effectively improving the knowledge retention and learning outcomes of science education students.I participate in academic research, development of educational grants and institutional review board protocols as well as attend curriculum development and course director meetings regarding interdisciplinary affairs and medical education. Show less As an Assistant Professor, I teach, mentor, and consult with academic professionals, scientists, and students involved in beta cell biology, beta cell engineering, and the establishment of innovative approaches and technologies to produce functioning beta cells in zebrafish for human biology translation. I oversee the laboratory direction and academic research. I also liaise with national and local agencies on academic laboratory operations including animal protocols, controlled substances, and standard operating processes. Part of my job includes recruiting, training, and overseeing multilevel researchers including technicians, undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, residents and fellows. I also draft applications and administer grants procured from federal and nonprofit agency funding sources and develop, write, and publish work-related articles. Selected Accomplishments Include:• Lead effective research efforts for inducing vertebrate pancreatic beta cells to regenerate; research highly capable of producing evidence-based outcomes for translation to human patients.• Mentored a third-year medical student who received a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Mentored Award for work within laboratory.
