  Lead Application Support Analyst

  • Brought in by Diagonal Consulting just after the implementation of the Parliamentary Information Management Services (PIMS) service which provides the Houses of Parliament with an information and document repository and portal used by over 8000 users. My key role was to provide 2nd line support for the applications and to train the House of Commons staff to better support both the applications and database and to perform troubleshooting tasks, problem diagnosis and pro-actively monitor the entire solution. Also assisted and trained staff to install and test software releases and upgrades to the bespoke and 3rd party applications. Worked closely with the House of Commons & Diagonal Helpdesks, the customer team and 3rd party vendors to investigate, replicate and resolve application and hardware issues logged through the support system or identified through pro-active monitoring.• Discovered and resolved major initial problems including JVM memory leaks on the content servers by use of Java profiling tools. Also discovered a major performance bottleneck by performing SQL profiling which highlighted an issue which resulted in a re-architecting of the database to split out the reports into its own database utilising replication. • With no DBA onsite I configured regular weekend database housekeeping which consisted of defragmentation of table indexes, tuning of fill factors on relevant indexes and performing general optimisation and tuning tasks on the SQL Server Cluster, despite all my previous experience being with Oracle or Sybase databases. This also involved regular SQL profiling and adding additional columns to indexes where required, optimising queries to improve performance and setting up SQL Agent jobs to perform regular, automated tasks.   • Heavily involved in build and migration to new web infrastructure utilizing latest application and 3rd-party vendor software including setting up and configuring of Apache2 webservers, Weblogic 9.2 clustered application servers running Vignette Application Portal 7.3 and Vignette Content Management system 7.4. • Setup and testing of automated Autosys pricing and web-based jobs including newsfeeds, user-registration and feedback forms. Also performed thorough load and performance testing of sites on new infrastructure using Loadrunner which led to an increase in throughput and overall performance improvements.• When first brought in I made it my priority to analyze each element of the public websites infrastructure. I identified a number of issues, often with the assistance of key vendors and internal support teams, to produce a set of fixes and upgrades to ensure website stability and performance was optimal. This involved analyzing websphere, db2, portal and cms configuration settings, tuning and upgrades of key pieces of software. As a result of this work over a few months, the website stability and performance improved dramatically.• Reported and investigated incidents affecting service to JP Morgan public websites, providing technical advice to internal business users and external customers, delivered requests for website changes, daily web performance monitoring and web-related systems and processes.• Responsible for ensuring implementation and configuration of middleware and content management products was performed. Ensured upgrading, and managing of key infrastructure components was carried out, maintained latest patch levels as specified by core/vendor to reduce risk and resolve outstanding issues.• Ensure all changes deployed and subject to the agreed change management process have been fully tested in Dev and UAT to minimise risk of impact to the Production environment. 收起
