Recruiting and managing student volunteers to relieve poverty and improve education in the Spartanburg community. My co-VISTA and I organized Hunger and Homelessness Week in October of 2013. During this week, we held events that raised awareness, provided education, as well as collected food and clothing items. As a result, Hunger and Homelessness Week collected 93 canned goods, $453 worth of winter clothing, and over $470 in monetary and in-kind donations. We collaborated with United Way of the Piedmont and the City of Spartanburg to put on 2014 MLK Day of Service. Nearly 400 volunteers served at 21 service locations putting in In March of 2014, I led a group of students down to New Orleans for their Alternative Spring Break trip. There, we worked with Youth Rebuilding New Orleans to refurbish a home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. I acted as the staff adviser for the USC Upstate Community Garden throughout the year. I partnered with a master gardener from HUB City Farmer's market to run the community garden at Arcadia Elementary. There we managed 6 garden beds - one for each grade level of students. This project encouraged students to eat a more healthy diet and provided education as to how food is grown. Show less

We completed 55 emergency repairs and home modifications for low-income homeowners who are elderly, disabled, or families with children. I also performed hands-on home repair services as needed, including grab-bar installations for King County Emergency Medical Services.
