  Internship and Master's thesis on calibration procedures for Camera-IMU-LiDAR platforms for UAS used in navigation and mapping operations.The objective of the thesis is to obtain a calibration matrix (relative rotation + position vector) extrinsic both for an IMU and a LiDAR with respect to a camera reference system (in order to simplify the use of Data Fusion techniques ), test how repeatable each procedure is and finally apply the results to experimental applications. In particular, the work can be summarized in the following activities: • Activity 1: documentation on the camera-IMU-LiDAR calibration procedures. • Activity 2: approach to the ROS platform and the Ubuntu operating system.• Activity 3: intrinsic calibration of the “PointGrey Chameleon3” camera using the “Calibration Toolbox for Matlab”. • Activity 4: camera-IMU calibration with the “Kalibr IMU-Camera Calibration” toolbox with laboratory tests on different configurations from which one in particular has been chosen to carry out repeatability tests. • Activity 5: camera-LiDAR calibration by implementing the UNINA procedure in MATLAB (Opromolla et al., 2017). • Activity 6: experimental applications.   In October 2020 I passed the admission tests for the Apple Developer Academy that I should have started in January. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the courses have been postponed to September 2021. Therefore, I have decided to look for other opportunities in the near future.

  Acquisition-strategy and orbit-configuration optimization for high-resolution Earth imaging small satellite (deployed also in constellation): this work addressed the problem of determine and adopt the proper acquisition-strategy and orbital configuration to meet the largest number of mission requirements at the least possible cost. In details, the work was carried out as follows: • Activity 1: Study of the orbit selection process (specialized orbits, type of orbital elements, perturbations, propagators, coordinate systems, etc.) • Activity 2: Utilize of two commercial software (STK and GMAT) to compare and analyse the effects of Earth’s Geopotential on the orbital elements and on the ground track. • Activity 3: Develop a numerical orbital propagator in MATLAB environment. • Activity 4: Develop an optimization tool and search of the optimum solution to counteract the effects of perturbations.
