  • Experience

    • Newfoundland Power

      Apr 2011 - Aug 2011
      Engineering Intern

Electrical Distribution department. Ran electrical flow studies, collected coordinates to help create a geographically referenced connectivity model of Newfoundland Power’s distribution system, updated power diagrams, edited Perl scripts.

    • Newfoundland Power

      Jan 2012 - Apr 2012
      Engineering Intern

Civil Engineering Department. Wrote a "Request for Proposals" document, helped design a dam and completed all required demolition/construction drawings using AutoCAD, wrote a report on a potential penstock replacement and wrote other technical documents.

    • ExxonMobil

      Sept 2012 - Dec 2012
      Engineering Intern

Reservoir Engineering department. Completed a high-level full field analysis of a secondary reservoir and completed pressure transient analysis on currently operating wells.

    • Memorial University of Newfoundland

      May 2013 - Aug 2013
      Engineering Intern - Inspirus Project

      - Designed and 3d printed components to build an intelligent sensor for unmanned vehicles.- Designed sturdy test frames for other experiments.

    • AMOG Consulting

      Jan 2014 - Apr 2014
      Scientific Technician

      - Performed analysis work and wrote report for successful joint industry project on mooring chain corrosion. - Contributed to programming work on flow-induced vibration software. - Notable accomplishment: project report was received well-enough that multiple follow-up projects were commissioned as a result.

    • Kvaerner

      Aug 2014 - Dec 2014
      Engineering Intern

      - Performed heat transfer analysis in commercial finite-element software of a gravity base structure. - Evaluated methods to prevent ballast water from freezing, as this structure was being designed for an Arctic climate.

    • Seamatica Aerospace

      Nov 2015 - Aug 2016
      Mechanical Design Engineer

      - Mechanical design for unmanned aerial vehicles and radar systems. Exercised design skills to create robust components quickly. - Notable Accomplishment: Wrote part of proposal that secured ~$200k funding.

    • University of Waterloo

      Sept 2017 - Jun 2019

      - Developed an extensively validated model of an advanced football helmet as part of the NFL Numerical Crowdsourcing project. Validated component-level models by assigning experimentally measured material properties. Our group met deadlines and created best-performing model of the four commissioned.- Coupled helmet model with human body model to predict brain response in concussion.- Mentored undergraduate research assistant with weekly meetings. - Notable accomplishment: 4x journal publications on helmets and head injury Show less - Taught weekly tutorials to ~60 students for two fundamental courses in solid mechanics. Tailored tutorials to target the most misunderstood concepts, by asking class frequent questions. Offered both math-based and demonstrative explanations of concepts to appeal to different learning styles. - Provided addtional, weekly office hours to provide one-on-one help, attended by up to 20 students some weeks.- Notable Accomplishment: recieved “Best Teaching Assistant” award in 2017 (no evaluation given in 2019) Show less

      • Graduate Research Assistant - Impact Mechanics and Material Characterization Group

        Jan 2017 - Jun 2019
      • Teaching Assistant

        Sept 2017 - Apr 2019
    • University of Toronto

      Jan 2020 - now
Graduate Researcher - Biomedical Simulation Laboratory

      - Developed fluid and solid simulations of brain aneurysms, resulting in new understanding of aneurysm mechanics. - Used vibration analysis, signal processing, statistical analysis (sklearn) to explain the cause of aneurysm sounds. - Mentored two new students who are now expanding this work – I have provided weekly technical support.- Presented research methodology and findings to a variety of audiences using intuitive, art-inspired visualizations.
