Bachelor of Science - BSc Combined Major in Honours Oceanography and Biology

Activities and Societies: UBC Aqua Society (scuba diving), Aviary Climbing Gym, UBC Oceanography Club My degree included course work in aquatic and salmonid ecology and fisheries management, but my most significant experience was my honours thesis on juvenile salmon feeding ecology in the Discovery Islands region. During my thesis, by comparing in-situ feeding calculations to ideal feeding rates I simulated through bioenergetic modeling, I gained experience managing and analyzing large datasets. Additionally, through the comprehensive literature review, I gained extensive knowledge of the oceanography of the region and state of the Pacific salmon.Generally, through this degree I developed a foundation in theoretical oceanographic fundamentals as well as practiced field sampling techniques such as plankton net tows, rosette casts for water chemistry testing, and collecting CTD cast data. Moreover, through the biology portion of my degree I practiced designing and executing statistically relevant ecological survey designs and studied physiology and cellular biology principles.
