Bachelor of Engineering - BE Software Engineering

Activities and Societies: I regularly attend Nigma events. These include various talks on the latest technological trends in order to bridge the gap between life as a student and working in such a dynamic industry. I was also a Global Opportunities Ambassador. This involved speaking at events and to individual students about the international placements I completed throughout my time at Queen’s. I graduated with Degree Plus accreditation due to my time spent working for Infosys in Bangalore, India as a Software Engineering Intern. • BT

      Oct 2014 - Oct 2014
      Work shadowing

I carried out testing of the BT Vision set-top-box software, and met with designers who were working on the next version of the company's Sport application, enhancing its functionality to ensure it was ready to launch in time for the beginning of the Champions League 2015. This experience allowed me to learn more about what a software engineer does: the importance of approaching problems logically, keeping accurate records, identifying the root cause of problems, working in an agile way, and supporting each other in a team. I gained exposure to programming languages, such as Python, and was given the chance to take part in teleconferences with staff around the globe, discussing their ideas on how to design and enhance their software. Through this, I saw the creative aspect of this job and how it offers an opportunity to bring ideas to life, as well as the countless opportunities to travel with your career. Show less

    • IKEA Group

      Apr 2015 - Jun 2018

The technical aspect of this job made it stimulating, and I enjoyed having more involvement and control over sales, profits and target setting within the business. This involved manning the host desk, handling large sums of money on check-outs and solving problems for customers at returns. I was trusted to do managerial roles, such as running the floor in my team leaders place, training new employees, and answering customer emails and calls about more complicated business queries.

      Junior Software Developer

My placement year was spent working in a Data Engineering role handling big data. I programmed in Scala and Spark SQL on IntelliJ and deployed my code using YAML within Ansible Playbook. I gained experience with AWS technologies such as Cloud Formation, Data Pipeline, S3 and EMR. I became familiar with Mac OS and Linux, as well as Hadoop, Impala, Hue, Hive and Pig. Git was used for peer review throughout. I gained valuable insight into the business and reporting side of working in advertising.

    • IKEA Group

      Sept 2019 - Aug 2020
      Textiles Coworker

For my final year in Ikea I worked in the textiles and bathshop department. I left the company after 5 years once I graduated from university. I learnt so much in my time here about customer service and team work. I also realised the importance of working for a company with ethical values in-line with my own. I am thankful to have worked somewhere that treats its employees well, particularly throughout the uncertainty regarding Covid-19.

    • Kainos

      Sept 2019 - May 2020
      Final Year Project

My final year project was sponsored by Kainos. This project aimed to improve the conversion rate of a patient receiving a medical appointment letter through to them attending the appointment, thus increasing public healthcare. This was done through Natural Language Processing, working in Python to engineer machine learning solutions to analyse text for personality type, sentiment analysis, and entity analysis. AWS Comprehend was also utilised. The front-end was a flask application, programmed in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. This was achieved by working in an agile fashion, in 2-week sprints. Git was used for peer review, and Trello for project management. Show less
