      Summer Research Student

I identified, isolated and characterized MAA-related molecules from Streptomyces bacterial strains in which MAA biosynthetic genes from diverse organisms have been introduced. I also studied the photoprotective effects of mycosporine glycine on Natamycin. I got a chance to set-up bacterial cultures using distinct, genetically engineered strains that have been already constructed in the laboratory. I also extracted natural products from these cultures, purified them using Biotage and Genevac, performed analytical chemistry experiments, in particular high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) but also liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy to characterize the purified molecules. Finally, I critically assessed and analyzed raw data using Excel and SPSS to interpret the results. At the end of the project, I presented these findings. During my project, I also collaborated with multidisciplinary members in my lab group for troubleshooting experimental errors. Show less
