      • The Medical Devices Laboratory mentored by Prof V S Venkatesan specializes in research & development of affordable Medical Devices. • My involvements were in terms of engineering design, CAD modelling, 3D printing, software development and formation of validation procedures for the following projects :a) Smart Walker for rehabilitation of children with Cerebral palsy. The walker is meant for a specific condition called Spastic Diplegia, which affects the lower limbs of the children (Funded by BIRAC, Dept of Biotechnology, Govt of India)b) An automated CPR Device for cardiac emergenciesc) An Exoskeleton for paraplegic patients (3D Printing, Backend Coding, App Development)• Experienced in ex-vivo large animal testing (Trials Conducted at SCTIMST, Trivandrum) and in-vitro testing (Procedures conducted at Dialysis Unit-Kasturba Hospital, Manipal) of indigenously developed Dialysis Cartridge - Class D Medical Device (BIRAC funded project)• Covid-19 contributions : Development of Biosafety units to prevent contamination of doctors from infected patients during the intubation process. These Biosafety units are currently deployed & functional in the Emergency Medicine Dept. at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and TMA Pai Hospital Udupi• Technical writing & presentation : Project grant proposal & presentation, journal papers, project progress reports & detailed documentation of all project stages• Project management & monitoring in terms of process flow, resources & funds utilization.• Delivered undergraduate and postgraduate teachings and project mentoring, enhancing student comprehension of academic research techniques and opportunities. • Conducted in-depth research utilizing various techniques, including qualitative and quantitative methods in development of an opto-electronics based sensor system called µSens.• The device is used for detecting different analytes like hard metals (mercury & lead), pathogens (bacteria) & anti-biotic (ciprofloxacin) in samples like wastewater, urine, milk, meat & blood, using the concept of evanescent wave fiber optics. My contributions in the development of the system includes :a) Concept Modelling :1. Created a 3D sketch of the entire device with all its subsystems, interfaces, and casing. 2. Modelled the opto-electronic interface unit and cartridge housing the optical fiber sensor. All drawings were rendered in the Autodesk Fusion360 platform.b) Embedded System Design & 3D Printing :1. Implemented the analog front end (AFE) comprising of amplifiers, photodiodes, and a 16-bit ADC.2. Designed and developed the digital interface consisting of an ESP32 system on chip microcontroller, 2.8-inch TFT touchscreen display with SD card slot, and a DS3231 real time clock module.3. 3D printed the opto-electronic interface unit and cartridge holding the sensing optical fiber.c) Algorithm Development : 1. Developed a software program using C++ in the Arduino IDE platform running in ESP32 system, enabling its interface with all components i.e., touchscreen display with SD card module, DS3231 real time clock and AFE using I2C and SPI protocols. 2. Made a Graphical User Interface (GUI) displaying processed data (in terms of absorbance), time-date & device temperature. A save button in UI was provided to store data on SD card in .csv format.d) Testing & Validation :1. System error testing : Dark noise : 7.5mV2. Performance testing, repeatability testing and stability testing • Interaction with industry for technology transfer.• Maintaining comprehensive documentation of research activities and findings.
