It examined the evolving visibility/invisibility of LGBT characters within the genre, as well as the thematic treatment of coming out, victimisation, sexual desire, and the heterosexual/homosexual binary. It interrogated the range of homophobic and LGBT-friendly responses of heterosexual characters. Examining LGBT characters and onscreen heterosexual responses revealed the uneven and contradictory nature of hegemonic negotiation that both included/domesticated certain aspects of the LGBT community and simultaneously maintained hegemonic heteronormativity.
