Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering

My thesis was on the "Conceptual Design for a Laminar-Flying-Wing Aircraft". The motivation was to assess whether a viable design could achieve a step reduction in fuel-burn requirement on aircraft of present day technology. The design featured a flying wing configuration combined with laminar flow control utilising surface suction. The research was multi-disciplinary covering aspects including: aircraft stability and control, aerodynamics, structures and propulsion. Industrial Placement Student

Investigated key design and manufacturing aspects of the Trent-700 thrust reverser.

    • Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge

      Jun 2007 - Oct 2007
      Undergraduate Research Assistant

Proposed preliminary design specification for laminar-flying-wing concept to be used as the basis for further studies carried out by a team of final-year undergraduate students.

    • Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge

      Jan 2008 - Jan 2012
      Undergraduate Supervisor and Demonstrator

Supervisions consisted of helping students go through examples paper questions on a fortnightly basis throughout the year, with group sizes of 2-4 students. Modules covered:- First and second year Thermofluid Mechanics. - Third year Incompressible Flow: potential flow theory, boundary layer theory, external aerodynamics and experimental techniques. -Third year Dynamics: moments of inertia, the gyro and Lagrange equations.Demonstrated and marked the flight mechanics aspect of the third year light aircraft design project. Typically 6 groups. Show less

      Feb 2012 - May 2016
      Research Associate

My role was to devise a swept-wing crossflow experiment and study the response of three-dimensional laminar boundary layers to controlled disturbances. The data was also used to support code development and verification, ultimately for use by industry leaders Airbus. I was responsible for a number of practical aspects, including: the design of the experimental setup, managing workshop technicians and overseeing the installation of the experiment inside the wind tunnel. I was required to keep up-to-date with literature, and transfer this knowledge and insight to the rest of the group. I made key decisions on the purchasing of hardware. I liaised directly with Airbus and BMT Fluid Mechanics for use of their experimental model and wind tunnel facility respectively. My achievements included: presenting at three international conferences, two Airbus symposiums and I was an invited speaker at several UK academic institutions. I prepared two conference papers, with another recently accepted. I peer-reviewed papers for several academic journals. Other responsibilities within the department also included lecturing a five-part lecture series on an introduction to fluid mechanics as part of an MSc course on computational fluid dynamics; I also assisted PhD and final year M.Eng students with various experimental techniques including flow visualisation, data acquisition and processing.
