    • Blacks Vets

      May 2007 - May 2007
      Veterinary Assistant

I spent one week doing work experience at Blacks, doing various tasks like attending to the daily caretaking needs of the animals under their care, such as feeding, walking and providing water and clean bedding; cleaning and disinfecting the animal cages, exam rooms, and treatment areas; sterilizing surgical instruments, restraining pets during examinations. I was responsible for cleaning up the operating suite after procedures during which time I became very familiar with excised testicles. I was regularly called to examination rooms to restrain distressed animals, I became very skilled at not being bitten or clawed and how to succefully administer tablets and remain intact. The practice asked me to take responsibility for a lost Staffordshire Bull Terrier bitch while they traced her owner. Show less

I observed numerous surgical procedures including spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. A cat involved in a road traffic accident had to have their hips reconstructed and I was allowed to watch the whole procedure. I asisted the preparation of a dog about to be put down. I was part of a team caring for distressed puppies after the birth had serious complications. Stewarts Vets had the contract for caring for some of the animals at Dudley Zoo.
