But, a little appreciation from a wider audience beyond your field of work can fuel great new endeavors.I was surprised when I found out that I was selected for the MIIS Young Alumni Award in 2012. This recognition came to me at a time when I had quit a promising university job to explore teaching opportunities in India. I wanted to give back to my roots, but my work was experimental and lacked focus. The award instantly turned into encouragement to continue striving for excellence in my work and let a focus emerge from the experiences I was creating for myself and my colleagues. After several projects with MIIS interns in India, my company, learnEdTM, is now working on a startup to design an App for on-demand lessons for English and communication skills for busy working people in India. Meeting other awardees and learning about their work has inspired me to think bigger and follow my ideas with greater commitment. This accolade has also made it profoundly clear to me that teaching ESL may not be as glamorous as saving whales or battling climate change, but TESOL professionals play an important role in creating opportunities for a better life. Most importantly, the award has given me the confidence to pursue what I believe in and to continue to "Be the Solution" to small and big problems that I encounter in my TESOL world. Show less
