  Machine Learning and Prediction of Superhard Compounds Research Intern

  I researched under Dr. Chen at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on materials science, specifically using machine learning to predict superhard compounds. My main objective was to find substitute superhard compounds with better properties for diamonds as they are the hardest material but very expensive. I inputted the chemical formula of a compound and it predicts the elastic properties and mechanical hardness of crystalline compounds. The machine uses about 60 features, such as atomic weight, atomic radius, etc. to learn. I compared two machine learning methods, XGBoost and random forests, on Jupyterlab. At the end of my research, I presented a poster at the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society. Show less
