      Urban Wildlife Monitoring Apprentice

Mississippi State Extension Service is a state agency designed to offer research-based information and educational programs to empower the state's residents to make well-informed decisions regarding their economic social and cultural well-being.To gain a better understanding of wildlife activity in the Jackson, MS metropolitan area, a pilot monitoring program was established as the start to a comprehensive database that could be used to inform future urban planning and wildlife management programs. In collaboration with the Urban Wildlife Information Network (UWIN) and 60 other partners across the world, we established 13 motion-triggered camera sites in green spaces across a 25 km transect starting in the urban core of Jackson, MS radiating northward to Gluckstadt, MS. The July 2019 season resulted in 3,387 detections with 8 species of mammals and several species of birds. Ongoing analysis will examine potential differences across site types and the urban-to-rural continuum including the overall detection rate and species richness and diversity.15 citizen scientists were trained on the protocol of the project and the functionality of camera trap equipment. A protocol packet was developed to assist citizen scientists with following step-by-step instructions so data can be accurately collected while performing field work. Show less

    • Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control

      Jun 2022 - Sept 2022
      Delaware Coastal Programs Policy Intern

Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is a state agency designed to ensure the wise management, conservation, and enhancement of the state’s resources, the protection of public health, access to quality outdoor activities, and education on historical and cultural natural resource use. Delaware Coastal Programs (DCP) is one of eight divisions within DNREC and is involved with various coastal and ocean-related efforts including the management of the state's National Estuarine Research Reserve sites, and oversees the Delaware Coastal Management Program (DCMP) which works to resolve conflicts related to Delaware’s coastal resources and reviews federal actions that may affect the state’s resources and uses. During my time with DCP, I completed an analysis of the DCMP Policy and Procedures document designed to offer recommendations to better streamline and potentially improve the enforceability of the policies. To supplement the analysis a recommendations report was developed to highlight the major findings of the project. A PowerPoint Presentation was delivered to the DCP staff at an Intern Symposium and to my internship committee/ the general public at the University of Miami's Graduate Student Symposium to complete the final requirements of my master's degree.
