      Doctoral Researcher

      In het kader van het multidisciplinaire KU Leuven-project "Veranderende visies op de talen in een globaliserende wereld (1540-1840)" onderzocht ik als doctoraatsonderzoeker de circulatie van vroegmoderne kennis over niet-Europese talen door missionarissen. Niet lang na de ‘ontdekking’ van de Nieuwe Wereld staken Europese missionarisorden de Atlantische Oceaan over om de plaatselijke bevolkingsgroepen te bekeren. De taalbarrière tussen de plaatselijke gemeenschappen en de Europeanen zorgde ervoor dat het moeilijk werd om te communiceren. Daarom besloten de missionarissen het woord van God te verspreiden in de inheemse talen, in plaats van hun eigen taal aan te leren aan deze bevolkingsroepen. De missionarissen waren er bijgevolg op gebrand om deze lokale talen volledig machtig te zijn en hun verworven kennis door te spelen aan hun opvolgers. Om die reden legden zij hun verworven kennis vast op papier. Ze schreven taalbeschrijvingen, zoals grammatica's en woordenlijsten, om de grammaticale structuren van de talen te bestuderen en woorden op te lijsten. Ze werkten ook inheemse vertalingen uit van religieuze teksten, zoals catechismussen, preek- en biechtboeken, om als hulpmiddel te dienen wanneer zij en hun opvolgers inheemse groepen toespraken. Dit zette een dynamiek proces in gang waarin missionarissen een brede waaier aan talen gesproken in Noord- en Zuid-Amerika bestudeerden, vastlegden op papier en vervolgens deze documenten verspreiden onder collega-priesters en opvolgers. Deze teksten staan centraal in de dissertatie die als doel heeft in kaart te brengen hoe missionarissen te werk gingen om kennis over inheemse talen te laten circuleren. Het bestudeert de universele patronen die de vroegmoderne missionarissen volgden om lokale talen te leren en taalstudie van missionarissen en onderzoekt hun daaropvolgende pogingen om kennis over inheemse talen vast te leggen en te verspreiden.
