As a student nurse, I will have completed over 500 clinical hours at Roanoke Memorial Hospital Carilion of which 190 hours are directly from a preceptorship in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on night shift.I gained my interest in nursing after my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. I was inspired by the nurses who worked diligently to assist my mother with whatever she needed throughout her cancer treatments. I want to specifically specialize in neonatal care as I feel this is my true calling. I feel as if it is a privilege to work with neonates and their families and I desire to form genuine connections so that I may provide comfort and education throughout their NICU experience. Having a child is supposed to be an exciting time in life and unfortunately for NICU families, this is often not the case. I am looking forward to taking part in not only saving lives but lifetimes! I have been Keely’s nursing instructor for over 3 semesters starting in Basic Skills class Fall of ’22. It has been very rewarding to watch Keely grow over this time. I was especially able to see this in the clinical environment as I taught part of her clinical rotations in both Spring and Summer.Keely is an excellent student, of that there is no doubt. What makes her shine is she is also an excellent clinician practicing above the level of most of her peers. She can connect theory to practice resulting in a safe, competent, and effective student nurse. Keely stays busy and engaged with her patient each day in clinical, always making the most of those precious clinical hours. She shows kindness and determination in meeting her patients’ needs. This, along with her application of knowledge, makes Keely a strong clinician.Keely also has great teamwork skills. She doesn’t hesitate to lend a hand and check on her peers during a busy clinical day. She also uses her experience as a patient care tech to find resources to help herself and others. Keely goes the extra mile to get the job done.Keely’s academic and clinical performance leave no doubt in my mind, she is well equipped to handle the challenges of nursing as a new graduate. I strongly endorse her for this new role.Sincerely,Amy Beachy, MSN, RNRadford University CarilionSchool of Nursing Show less
