      Jul 2010 - May 2012
      Masters Student Researcher

      • Synthesized C3 and C4 symmetrical polycyclic amino acids via Palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reactions (Heck, Suzuki coupling).• Presented the research work in two seminars and wrote a dissertation to defend my Master’s Degree.

 7 years of experience in routine maintenance, instrumental troubleshooting and technical repairing, and training of group instruments: LC-ESI-MS/MS, MRM (Waters G2-XS-QTOF, Xevo TQ-S), GC-MS (Agilent, achiral, chiral), HPLC (Agilent, normal, reversed phase, chiral), Ultracentrifuge (Beckman-Coulter), and UV-VIS (Beckman-Coulter) that were shared by a team of co-workers.  Safety coordinator and person-in-charge for a BSL-1 facility laboratory for 6 years: maintained material safety data sheet (MSDS), chemical inventory, ordered lab supplies, chemicals, and replacement parts for instruments, experienced in safe handling of toxic, corrosive, and flammable chemicals and gases. Trained colleagues with safe handling of bacterial cell culture techniques. Skilled in using techniques like High vacuum Schlenk line, Parr Hydrogenator, NMR (1D and 2D, 500 MHz), Ozonator, FT-IR, Polarimeter, and Flash Column Chromatography. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and expertise in analysis of large set of data, and explanation of results in the form of scientific documentation. Rich experience working in Molecular Biology: cloning, expression and purification of proteins, affinity column chromatography, Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, NanoDrop Spectrophotometer, and protein modelling using software packages like PyMOL, Chimera, Swiss Model, and ligand docking using AutoDock Vina and AutoDock Tools. Initiated a collaboration where I developed an assay for the detection and quantification (GC/MS) of a group of methoxypyrazines, the major component considered to cause Potato Taste Defect in Rwandan coffee beans (Joseph Bigirimana, Gut Lab, Department of Entomology, MSU and Jean Bosco Shingiro, Bourquin Lab, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, MSU).  Collaborated with Conagen Inc. (Bedford, MA) on Elucidating the Biosynthetic Pathway of Pyrazines in Bacteria. Also developed the first conclusive method to separate and characterize every diastereomers of arylserine analogs using GC-MS through chiral auxiliary derivatization.  Deciphered the mechanism of α/β-amination from a surrogate amine donor to an epoxide backbone using ping-pong enzyme kinetics combined with protein-ligand docking. Investigated the mechanism and factors resulting in Potato Taste Defect in Rwandan Coffee Beans in a collaborative project where I contributed in developing an assay to quantify different methoxypyrazines in green and roasted coffee beans.
