  I learned a lot of about being an agriculture teacher as Marshal was my first professional teaching position. Above all I learned the importance of relationships in lasting learning. I learned classroom management and lesson planning while teaching all levels of high school. I learned to balance teaching responsibilities with managing a working greenhouse and school field plot. I learned the importance of developing community support and asking for help when needed.

  In this role I taught agricultural focused courses, managed the school greenhouse and land lab, and advised the FFA program. It was here that I developed a true passion for integrating science into my courses. I sought further training to deepen my knowledge and understanding scientific principles and best practices for teaching lab-based learning. I redesigned my curriculum to be inquiry based to allow students to discover and engage with the materials. I also brought in technology to my program through the purchase of Vernier LabQuest interfaces and sensors; as well as iPads, Smartboard, and Smart Response systems. Show less

  AAEC is a public charter high school offering early college credit. As an agriculture science teacher, this position challenged me to make agriculture relevant to urban high school students. To achieve this goal I blended engaging science curriculum with hands-on projects that challenged students to reimagine the meaning of agriculture. ​In addition to teaching introductory agriculture, animal science, equine science, and college readiness courses, I managed the school horse herd and facilitates, orchard, and student workers.   As part of the youth educational outreach team I created hands-on lessons to reinforce scientific concepts with an agricultural focus and brought them into classrooms across the state of Oklahoma. I was integral in the creation and development of a lending library of science labs that shipped across the United States. Additionally, I developed and executed teacher trainings for the lending lab program, Agriscience Fair integration into classrooms, and Introduction to Robotics and Coding.
