As a PhD student my research was in the field of marine phytoplankton ecology and biogeochemistry. Specifically, I investigated phytoplankton communities of subsurface chlorophyll maxima in the summer stratified waters of the Western English Channel. This research included investigation of phytoplankton community structure within subsurface chlorophyll maximum thin layers, the vertical transition of phytoplankton community structure in a stratified water column using in situ holography, primary production within subsurface chlorophyll maxima, and environmental controls on interannual variability in chlorophyll and phytoplankton community structure of subsurface chlorophyll maxima. I presented aspects of my research at the Challenger Society Conference in 2014 and 2016, the SSB Annual Science Meeting in 2015 and the AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting in 2016.I was also a Mayflower Scholar, which required me to spend roughly a third of my time teaching and demonstrating to University of Southampton undergraduates on ocean science programmes during the first three years of my PhD studies. My Mayflower Scholar responsibilities included tutoring Science without Borders (SwB) students, demonstrating/teaching on 1st, 2nd and 3rd year ocean science field courses, and demonstrating/teaching/marking for a range of 1st and 2nd year marine biology modules, e.g. 'Phytoplankton and Primary Production' and 'Introduction to Marine Ecology'. Show less As a service assistant my main role was to provide a library service during evenings and weekends. Specific activities I was responsible for included shelving library stock, providing assistance with the self-issue machine, locating items for library users, monitoring the book security system, closing the library at the end of every shift, opening the library on weekend shifts, and providing a general enquiry service. There was a team of 4-6 service assistants working for the National Oceanographic Library at any given time and thus there was a rota in operation, which I was personally responsible for producing on a monthly basis for a period of just over two years.
