  My professional responsibilities as a consulting structural fire engineer included the following: • Preparing and managing the delivery of fire safety strategies for various types of projects;• Applying fire engineering techniques to reach approval for non-code compliant schemes (e.g. probabilistic approach on external fire spread, time-equivalence approach to rationalise structural fire protection, smoke modelling via simple zone models or more complex CFD models);• Providing guidance on fire testing of structural elements (concrete, steel and composite members);• Actively participating in research projects and co-publishing research papers in the field of Fire Engineering;• Assisting in the development of others (Graduate Fire Engineers within the organisation but also outside the organisation – e.g. acted as an industrial supervisor for a PhD student sponsored by Arup and EPSRC); • Reporting and monitoring the financial performance of fire projects; • Carrying out the fire risk assessments and site inspections to assess the condition of fire safety systems and structural fire protection; • Acting as a third party reviewer to help validate structural fire engineering software that has been written by others (externally to Arup); • Helping in the development of a fire engineering tool (FlashOva) by writing parts of the Visual Basic code for the excel spreadsheets. FlashOva is a fire engineering spreadsheet which can calculate the following: o Sprinkler activation times; o Smoke modelling of axi-symmetric and balcony spill plume (both steady state and transient); o Heat transfer by means of radiation (parallel, perpendicular, general angle or cylindrical object); o Heat transfer on structural elements (based on the BS EN 1991 principles).
