      Mar 2001 - Sept 2001
Praktikant (research chemistry intern) - lead optimisation

Industrial placement as part of my undergraduate degree. I joined the group of Research Chemistry Fellow (Chemiker), Dr Andy Edmunds and undertook lead optimisation chemistry research synthesising several new potentially bio-active compounds for testing as herbicides. My key activities were:- To develop synthetic routes to new compounds based on natural products under supervision- To produce these new compounds in the laboratory using practical synthetic chemistry- To chemically characterise intermediates and final products using a range of techniques including chromatography, mass spectrometry and NMR- To record laboratory methods undertaken in both English and German Show less

      Jan 2007 - Aug 2008
      Post-doctoral research associate in nanoscience

Conducted international quality fundamental research at the boundary between physics and chemistry under the supervision of Dr James O’Shea funded as part of a £3.5M EPSRC grant. I co-authored 7 papers in leading scientific journals during this period. Responsible for day-to-day management of the work of 3 PhD students and the O’Shea group lab facilities.
