  Thesis title: Occupant Detection and Tracking in Buildings Using Floor-Vibration SignalsTopics: Structural dynamics, Finite element modeling, Instrumentation, Signal processing, Machine-learning, Model-based data interpretation- Develop a framework for non-intrusive detection and tracking of building occupants based on vibration measurements and structural behavior models using MATLAB, PYTHON, and ANSYS- Distinguish footstep-induced floor vibrations from other spurious activities for occupant counting and recognition using structural-behavior information and machine-learning techniques including support vector machine (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) classifiers.- Development of a footstep-impact load model using measured vertical ground reaction forces from multiple occupants and assessment of sources of variability in walking gait- Track occupants using model-based methodologies that involve physics-based models (finite element simulations) in the interpretation of floor-vibration measurements- Explore methods based on knowledge of structural behavior and clustering (using k-means) floor-vibration measurements to identify an occupant in terms of footstep-contact dynamics and to assess gain in tracking precision- Test and validate the proposals using four full-scale case studies in Switzerland and Singapore Show less
